Hey, thanks for stopping by. My name is Paul. As the great Niall Horan sings: Nice To Meet Ya!

Many, many years ago when I worked at Tower Records in Southampton, a member of staff (I think her name was Ruth, she was a temp) christened me Paul ‘Popsmith’ due to my vast knowledge and deep love of pop music. The best thing about the word pop is it can include many genres, as the true meaning of ‘pop music’ is what is, or was, popular at any given time. It’s also mainly the term to define ‘cheesy’ music and there is loads of that on offer, and always needed. It really gets my goat that music ‘snobs’ dismiss this type of music as ‘flash in the pan’ or ‘lacking substance’. My favourite artists, all featured on this website, have mostly been in the business for many years and have many record sales, streams, awards and accolades under their belt, so I guess part of why I wanted to do this was to show that, as well as celebrate my passion and discuss it with others.

So, I’ve been wanting to get my own website up and running for many years now and I decided what better time than during the awful 2020 lockdown to do it! This is a huge piece of work and will be a constant work in process so please bear with me as I continue to add to the website. Please comment and get involved as I want to get people talking and meet people that have the same passion as me. Also please get in touch if you notice any mistakes. I am not perfect and although I double check everything, I will make mistakes.

My absolute favourite artist is Louise Redknapp. I don’t specifically know why, it’s just something she has that speaks to me. I love her voice, it’s smooth like honey, and I just love the whole package: the songs, the videos, the routines. When she is on stage in front of me I completely loose myself and get drawn in. The fact that she returned to music in 2019 lit a fire within me. I just didn’t think she would be doing it again so I intended to make the most of it.

My favourite group of all time is Eternal. This isn’t because of Louise. The very first time I heard Stay I was hooked. Easther Bennet has one of the best voices of all time, and their music just resonates with me. Again, it’s the complete package. Love them.

Also a massive fan of Kylie (who isn’t?) and I Should Be So Lucky was the very first single my mum bought me, and the Kylie Minogue album was the first album I bought with my own money. Also a big Madonna fan, I love JLo and Janet Jackson. Roxette have a very special place in my heart as I have listened to their music from a young age, Marie Fredriksson had one of the best voices of all time. Also a massive fan of Darren Hayes, his voice and lyrics move me like no one else, as well as the fabulous Adam Lambert. I could go on and… oh wait!

That’s why I created this website!

I’m also a bit of a geek. Massive Star Wars fan. I love sci-fi and horror, as well as rom coms and musicals! Recently been loving The Mandalorian, This Is Us, Morning Show, Servant, RuPaul’s Drag Race and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Casual gamer. Favourite game of all time is Mass Effect 2, but love the whole series, yes even Andromeda (it wasn’t that bad). Recently played Star Wars: Fallen Order on XBox360 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 on Nintendo Switch.

I’ve also recently got back into doing artwork thanks to my shiny new iPad Pro. I am loving Procreate. I love a good mash-up so I have been celebrating my two favourite things with my artwork: pop music and sci-fi comics. I will also be uploading my artwork here. I am completely new to digital media and I am teaching myself how to use Procreate and I am really happy with my creations so far but I know they aren’t perfect. Any Procreate tips you can share will be very much appreciated. I have watched some great YouTube vids that have really helped so if you can recommend any I would love to hear from you.

I never minded being thought of as a pop star. People have always thought that I wanted to be seen as a serious musician, but I didn’t, I just wanted people to know that I was absolutely serious about pop music.
